Professor Raj Mutharasan featured in L.A. Times:
Biosensors for Detection of
Food-borne Pathogens
Professor Raj Mutharasan of the department of chemical and biological engineering
was featured in the L.A. Times on October 9th, 2006. After the recent attention given
to food-borne pathogens in the media nationwide, Professor Mutharasan's research on detecting food-borne pathogens was cited for finding a method
of detecting individual bacterium in food samples. Dr. Mutharasan’s research group
is studying the use of piezoelectric-excited millimeter-sized cantilever sensors to detect
pathogens and toxins such as E. coli and salmonella. The goal of this research will be for
widespread use of the sensor infood processing plants to reduce the chance of contamination
spreading to consumers.
